About Children in Need

Children in Need is a UK-wide charity appeal dedicated to helping children and young people who are facing disadvantage. The charity focuses on four major areas of need: poverty, mental health, family challenges and social inequality. It gives funding to organisations across the UK to deliver vital support in these areas.

History & reach
The first official "Children in Need" telethon appeal launched in 1980, replacing earlier BBC appeals, and has since become an annual fixture. BBC Children in Need has helped hundreds of thousands of children and young people each year. For example, in 2021–22, more than 450,000 children and young people were supported through its grant funding across the UK. There are thousands of projects funded, including small local charities, youth groups, counsellors, emergency support schemes and more.

How your support helps.
· Grants and donations enable local organisations to provide direct help where it’s needed most — providing counselling, relief and safe spaces.

How Benevity can help

If your company uses (or is considering) Benevity, there are powerful tools and options that can magnify your Children in Need campaign. Here’s how Benevity can supercharge your impact — and how you can request a demo to see it in action.

  • Donation matching: Benevity makes it easy for your company to match employee donations. Matching encourages more people to give and often increases individual donation amounts.
  • Seeding rewards: Your company can seed funds (allocate small “starter” rewards) into employees’ giving accounts. This gives people “donation currency” to use, lowers the barrier to first participation and tends to boost both engagement and retention.
  • Peer matching / match pools: Benevity supports peer matching, where employees themselves can create match pools or match each other’s donations. It’s a more social and collaborative way to multiply impact.
  • Challenges and gamified micro-actions: To keep momentum and engagement high, Benevity supports challenges (leaderboards, mini-campaigns, team competitions, etc.) as part of the giving programme. These fun, competitive elements help involve more people.
  • Volunteer tracking and matching volunteer time: Benevity allows employees to log volunteer hours and, where policy allows, have those hours matched or rewarded. This enables giving beyond just financial donations.
  • Global / vetted nonprofits directory: Employees can choose from a large, vetted database of nonprofits. This ensures that the causes they care about are credible and compliant.
  • Automated reporting and impact measurement: Benevity offers dashboards and reports so your team can see how much was raised, how many people participated, what causes benefited, etc. After the campaign, you can share impact stories internally with solid data.
  • Flexible giving architecture: Whether your campaign is global, local or hybrid (remote + in-office), Benevity supports various currencies, multiple donation methods (payroll, credit card, etc.) and tailored matching and seeding.
