The CarMax Foundation relaunched their Care Card program for GivingTuesday

The challenge

The CarMax Foundation planned to transition to the Benevity platform shortly before one of their annual giving programs, Care Cards, which kicks off on GivingTuesday. They needed to build excitement and maintain their incredible program participation rate of approximately 70% while ensuring a smooth transition to the new corporate purpose platform.

Since 2021, on GivingTuesday, The CarMax Foundation has seeded their associates’ giving accounts. For the first time using the Benevity enterprise platform, it was possible for associates to use those funds to donate to one or more charitable causes that they love. Promoting donating and volunteering opportunities through news features and quick links on the platform made it easier than ever for their people to discover the nonprofits most important to them.

Keeping up the momentum

To keep the Goodness going all year round, The CarMax Foundation runs a Volunteer Team Builder program that continued seamlessly after switching to Benevity. When five or more associates volunteer with a nonprofit, the organization becomes eligible to receive a donation. In addition to the Volunteer Team Builder program, CarMax offers a broad Matching Dollars and Matching Hours program focused on associate choice. Associates who serve on the board of a nonprofit can direct an annual $1,000 donation to the organization in recognition of their service.

The Community Relations team at CarMax worked with Benevity to learn best practices and create a clear implementation schedule that allowed for room to test the new platform and launch with time to spare. Plus, by using GivingTuesday as a deadline, they were able to plan ahead to ensure all of their teams were ready for the campaign. 

The result

Since launching with Benevity in fiscal year 2023, The CarMax Foundation’s program saw:

  • More than 23,000 associates redeem their $50 GivingTuesday seeding, resulting in more than $1.1M in donations to over 7,000 nonprofits
  • 192,000 volunteer hours logged
  • More than $1.9M in employee donations overall
  • 71% associate participation during their Giving season
