Strongly passionate about sustainable development and entrepreneurship, Francesca Tettamanzi from Frontiers believes in the power of knowledge dissemination to create change and growth. As Learning and Development Lead, she is dedicated to drive a culture of continuous professional and personal development across the organisation.

Frontiers is a scientific publisher whose goal is to “Make Science Open” to support healthy lives on a healthy planet. As a whole, they strongly believe that each of their employees – or Frontons – play an important role in having a positive impact on society. That’s why they build effective campaigns that enable employees to believe in the power of the Frontiers community and take positive actions that support their charity partners.

Frontiers strives to make access to science available and open to everyone, to generate more knowledge and accelerate innovation, health and prosperity for all.

With spontaneous employee-driven activities taking place on a monthly basis, the team needed a tool to make it easy for employees to find local opportunities to get involved, see what their colleagues are up to, support each other, and track all the great impact they were having on the community.

In line with the company’s mission to ensure healthy lives on a healthy planet, Frontiers wanted to help their people play their part by empowering them to change the world and contribute to the global United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in a meaningful and sustainable way.

It became increasingly apparent that Frontiers needed to launch a philanthropy programme to enable Frontiers staff to easily give back to their communities. The solution involved the rollout of:

  • A supportive company policy
  • A go-to platform for employees, near and far
  • A hub to build a purpose-driven culture and keep track
Through their employee volunteering platform, Benevity, they were able to give their employees a space to connect over volunteering activities and encourage further participation in the overall campaign.

The Results

  • 400 hours of volunteering
  • Field volunteering such as meal preparation and remote volunteering
  • Supporting the NHS COVID vaccination efforts

This year, Frontons engaged in over 400 hours of volunteering spanning across a multitude of activities that highlight the personal skills of their employees. This includes field volunteering, such as meal preparation, and remote volunteering, such as proofreading, translating, and tutoring. They also put a focus on engaging with the NHS to support COVID vaccination efforts.
