Challenges
The challenge
Wave cares about their people, the planet and their customers. They had earned multiple accolades acknowledging their focus on employee wellbeing, and their engaged employees were encouraged to be mindful of the environment. What they were missing was a way to capture the full impact their people were creating. They needed a platform that could track, reward and inspire small actions and also support employee volunteering.
The solution
Choosing the right tool
Benevity’s social impact product, Challenges, gave Wave an easy way to inspire and encourage their people to create good habits by enabling them to track small actions that led to big impacts. Each Challenge came with a pre-written template and a clear call to action that made it easy for people to get involved.
Make it simple
Wave decided to make it simple for employees to participate with Challenges themed for awareness events, like World Water Day. They kicked off their new program with an easy and accessible water Challenge. All people had to do was turn off their taps while brushing their teeth, not just when they were done. Everyone — employees and their families too — was saving more water in no time.
Embed it into the culture (from the top down!)
Wave fully committed by including their new program in their business strategy. Garnering participation and support from Wave’s passionate leadership team made getting involved more than “just another thing to do.” They customized the Challenges to fit their people’s needs, and encouraged them to do even more good by finding volunteer opportunities that were right there on the same platform.
The result
- In the 2023 fiscal year*, Wave employees completed 4,766 Challenges (a 312% increase YoY!) around saving water, protecting the environment and improving wellbeing, inclusion and diversity. They also collectively saved 376,981 L of water and 1,801 kg CO2e.
- The company’s commitment to the environment and to each other proved useful in achieving highly competitive scores within public sector contracts.
- In 2024, Wave won the Gold award against multinational competition at the UK Employee Experience Awards for their CSR strategy.
Challenges was a great way to introduce Wave employees to the Benevity platform and encourage them to take action in other ways too. This year, as well as raising the business target on accumulated Challenges and Hopeys (rewards earned for completing activities), they’re focused on encouraging every employee to use their day of volunteer leave, and they’re recruiting champions from across business teams to help them achieve their ambitious goals.
